I found myself wanting to count the number of occurrences of a particular word in a huge file.

No. This counts the *total* number of words and lines in a file - it does not count a *particular* word.

However, you can do this from the search dialog.

When you go to *search* for a string, you can press the "Count All" button (instead of the Search button) to count the occurrences of the string.

If you are using the Search Bar instead of the search dialog, you can right click on the Down Arrow button and select "Count All".
